Using the staghorn coral Acropora millepora as a model, scientists from the University of Southampton have found that the fluorescent pigments that are mostly responsible for coral colours act as sunscreens for the symbiotic algae that live in the coral tissue. These alga require light to produce sugars, which they can contribute to the nutrition of the corals in return for the shelter and the supply of nutrients that are provided by the coral host.

BSAC wants to understand how it can use digital tools and services (website, data management, emails, social media etc) to better effect.

To that end they have commissioned an independent research study. They would like to hear from existing members and lapsed members. Following an AUAS Board Meeting on 13th January 2015, it has been confirmed that Dan Orr has been elected President of the Academy.

Dan, a diver of nearly 50 years standing, and a dive professional for over 40 years, brings a wealth of experience to the role.
